Make your decisions under the watchful eye of the VAL, the station’s sardonic AI, but beware of invading space pirates who will do their best to ruin your carefully laid plans. You can become the designer of a galactic utopia – but only if your management skills are up to the task. In Spacebase Startopia players will begin humbly, but with grand ambitions. ![]() The game is also available for PC via the Kalypso Store and Steam. Kalypso Media has announced that space station management sim Spacebase Startopia is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles through Xbox Game Preview. A host of galactic gadgetry designed to pique the interest of a range of diverse alien lifeforms is available to Xbox and PC players now. The co-op and skirmish modes seem intriguing however.Spacebase Startopia allows players to manage their very own donut-shaped space station and deck the space (base) as they see fit. Otherwise, energy wound up piling up way too quickly to even really matter as a currency mechanic. In Spacebase Startopia, manage your very own space station, maintaining three unique deck types, accommodating eight different alien races and defending. Also, I had wages that deducted periodically based on the number of hirelings). I also remember having to tinker with the script of the original game to make the economy more difficult (I put in a "station tax" that would periodically deduct energy based on the number of sectors I opened, so I would have to achieve, or know I was able to achieve, a certain rate of income to expand successfully. The original game seemed nearly over just as everything was opening up. I find the Startopia campaign charming, and I've been enjoying the beta just fine, but there are 20 years of hindsight to help you avoid this problem - why just replicate it, unless it's just not bothering to do the homework?Īlthough, given the publisher and developer's other output, there will likely be other missions drip-fed through DLC to variable reviews. The last mission requires you to put all of your knowledge to use, but it seems like the game is just getting started.Sounds worrying similar. Genre: Simulation, Strategy Rating: E-Everyone Region Code: Region Free Release Year: 2021 Features: Single-player, Multi-player, PvP, Online PvP, Co-op. But the real problem with the campaign is that it ends just when you're comfortable with the specifics of running your base. SPACEBASE STARTOPIA captivates with its original mixture of economic simulation and empire building strategy paired with classic RTS skirmishes and a good dose of humor. "The campaign is fun, but it sometimes seems like an extended tutorial. Anyway, my point though is that I was kind of hoping that with the remake some additional thought would be given to mission creation and giving players some additional story and/or different goals for scenario completion, but based on the preview video, that does not seem to be the case. That said, the Randomizer mod was amazing and would be nice to have built in to the new software. To be fair, most of them felt very derivative of the original missions, so I suppose there wasn't a lot of room for creativity here anyway. It was really left to the modding community to create interesting missions for the game. In addition to the extensive single player Campaign, an individually configurable sandbox mode as well as both a competitive and a cooperative multiplayer mode. One of the big criticisms of the original game was that the 10 missions that came with the game were really just a tutorial for the sandbox mode and some argued that the game didn't come with any actual missions. The one thing that really stood out was that they said the game comes with 10 missions that will teach you how to populate all three decks of the station. Thanks to the preview video that was posted, those of us who don't have beta access have learned a bit more about the game. ![]()
