Hotkeys with the cmd or shift modifiers, or with no modifiers at all, work perfectly fine. From Controls window, select media program from the list and click create hotkeys. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), then click Keyboard Shortcuts on the right. After launching the application, right-click its system tray icon and select Edit Settings. There is no need for any extra codecs and plugins to handle the files.
